Chapter Nine
Franklin was agitated as the weekend approached. They had gotten a little bit more snow on Thursday night, which meant the drive into Denver would be that much slower and more treacherous. He had verified that the truck was gassed up and then headed into the convenience store to grab a cup of coffee. Ramon and a few of the other mechanics were staying late to finish some of the backlogs of cars, but Franklin had decided he didn’t feel like sticking around, and since he was the boss, he didn’t have to. Ramon and the others didn’t really have to either, but they could charge him overtime for it. Their tiniest mechanic, a woman named Liz, was rummaging around in the engine compartment of a massive, lifted SUV. Ramon was putting a tire back on a sedan. Phil, another older man, was taking a coffee break and munching on one of the morning’s leftover donuts.
“Anything you guys need from me before I head out? Ramon has the company credit card if you want to order dinner or anything.”
Liz popped back out of the engine compartment to look at him. Her red hair was streaked with sweat. “Whoa, damn, Rust! You’re all dressed up! Going to see your houseguest, eh?”
Franklin wished he wasn’t turning a vivid red, but he played it off and ignored it because he knew there was no stopping his blush once it got going. He was indeed dressed-up more than usual in a gray button-down, green sweater, and black jeans. He had even shaved properly and done something with his hair and styled it with some light pomade. He had debated putting his earing back in, but he had been unable to find the back for the stud he liked, so he eventually gave up. “Yeah, yeah. Laugh all you want. I’m going to get a fancy dinner in the city out of it if nothing else.” He knew he sounded petulant and defensive.
Liz grinned at him. “I bet you’ll have a good time. Think of all of us slaving away up here while you’re being wined and dined by Mr. Potholes.”
“You are under no obligation to slave away. If you want to go home, you can. If you’re staying here and working into the night, it’s on you.”
“We’re just trying to rob you blind with overtime.” Phil toasted him with the coffee mug.
“Hmm, well, have fun with that. Last call for me to sign anything before I leave. Otherwise I’m going to be MIA until Monday morning.”
“Who’s working the store?” Ramon asked, looking up.
“Alex and Viv are both taking shifts. They know to call if anything comes up. The gas delivery came through already, so that won’t be an issue.”
“Make sure they both have my number if they need anything quick.” Ramon went back to his task.
“Will do, thanks, Ramon.”
“Get out of here!” Liz made shooing motions, still grinning like a maniac.
“I’m going, I’m going!” He waved at them as he went outside and got into his truck.
